Why are cell phones a problem in prison?
Inmates use cell phones to conduct criminal business from the inside out, which undermines the safety and security for everyone inside prison and for the public outside.
Using wireless technology, inmates are coordinating and continuing criminal activities, a dangerous problem that could jeopardize criminal cases, endanger witnesses, get people killed, warn fellow inmates about movements of correctional officers, run gangs, make drug deals, extort money, engage in credit card and tax fraud, identify theft, reprisals against informants to deliveries of drugs, cigarettes and other intoxicants - and much, much more.
Cell phones are thought to be the worst type of contraband, because in most cases, they provide an easy, continuing connection back to the inmate's life on the street.
